Music Preferences

The music industry caters to everyone equally, from college students to the elderly, and allows online access to our preferences. In the study of psychology, music preferences may be a good indicator of someone’s personality. To carry it a step further, people with a matching music preference seem to share certain similar traits as well. That being said—with the great number of differing personalities and music genres—it’s not surprising that music preferences vary substantially.

Cultural and social differences are likely factors that contribute to this variance in taste. While our grandparents may have thought Elvis to be “hot”, today’s college student music preferences tend toward 50 cents and Green Day. Grade school student music preferences will likely be more innocent than these college-goers, and those of a higher social standing may have a more refined taste. Though not impossible, it is improbable that Uncle John is going to throw a Club Mix into his car stereo, though he may have to bring his earplugs the next time he visits his teenaged niece.

This great variance in music preferences has given birth to a thriving industry with thousands of different artists to satisfy everyone’s taste. While the genres remain specific, many have had to adapt to the changes and new developments. A variety of radio stations and CD players now come standard in our vehicles, and more people are opting to subscribe to XM satellite radio for even more listening options.

In a fast evolving world of technology, the music industry has continued to stay afloat with current technological breakthroughs to promise an endless kaleidoscopic of possibilities for the modern music lover. As with any long-time industry, the bigwigs in the music business understand the importance of utilizing new avenues and methods to bring its products to the consumer.

One obvious avenue is the Internet. Various online sites now allow users to preview songs and even download their favorites for a minimal fee. There are many music websites that offer the user the chance to go online to choose a song for one’s music preference. No more going to the local record store and spending precious time browsing through CDs. Hundreds of thousands of songs are available on multiple sites, making it easier (and arguably, just as affordable) to buy your favorite music without ever stepping foot out the door. Whatever your music preferences, you will be fully satisfied.
