GPS Navigation
The GPS or Global Positioning System is a Global Navigation Satellite System which is the only fully functional navigation system of the day. There are about two dozen or more GPS satellites in medium Earth orbit. All of these satellites are transmitting signals that enable GPS receivers to establish the GPS direction, location, at the same time speed.
In 1978, the first ever experimental satellite was launched. GPS navigation became a crucial support to navigation all over the world. It has been an important tool for making maps and surveying lands. You may not have a GPS navigation system but you might have used it several times with sites like Google Maps or Yahoo Maps. GPS navigation systems also provide a more accurate time reference that is now widely used in thousands of applications.
The GPS navigation system was first officially named NAVSTAR GPS or Navigation Satellite Timing and Ranging Global Positioning System, after it was developed by the United States Department of Defense. The United States Air Force 50th Space Wing managed the satellite. Every year, the US spends approximately US $750 million just to maintain the system. It also includes the replacement of aging satellites, plus research and development. Even though it is high-maintenance, GPS navigation is offered free for civilian use.
GPS navigation units calculate its position through measuring distance between itself and three or more GPS satellites. Trilateration is the term used to compute the position of the GPS navigator by determining the position of, and distance to, at least three satellites. GPS navigators typically do not have perfectly precise time so it has to track one or more additional satellites to correct the time difference.
Most new cars today come with GPS car navigation. If you didn’t add that option and later need one, you can simply buy a portable GPS navigation. It is recommended that you browse through all the GPS navigation software you can search online. Read GPS navigation system reviews so you’ll get an idea of what other buyers have experienced. There are also reviews that come with GPS navigation comparison that could help you decide even better.
